Lenovo is using technology to build a better world for our customers, colleagues, and the planet

At Lenovo, we’re committed to value. But that means more than just delivering industry-leading technology solutions. We’ve begun to think smarter about our customers, our communities, and the planet, focusing on building resilience within our business

Thinking smarter

We’re focusing on building products that are manufactured with innovative technology that minimises our carbon footprint. It’s also important to us that both our products and their packaging are innovative and sustainable, maximising the use of recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible. To build the eco-friendliness of our products, we’re designing technology that consumes less energy during use, is simpler to maintain and deploy, and ultimately will last longer before needing to be replaced.

Innovative packaging

We’ve been working with our innovative packaging designers and engineers to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and logistics. Already, by minimising waste and using sustainable materials, we’ve used 3,100 tons less packaging than in 2008. We’ve achieved this through using lighter, bio-based packaging and tapeless boxes. Together, these changes have led to 6.7% efficiency improvement in transportation CO2 emissions, and a significant reduction in the amount of tape we use.

Energy conservation

An important part of building a smarter future is considering how we can maximise our energy conservation and minimise greenhouse gas emissions in our everyday operations. To achieve this, we set emission reduction targets that have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, meaning they were verified to support global scientific goals to limit global temperature increase. We managed to exceed our target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% a year ahead of schedule and achieved a 92% reduction overall. But we won’t stop there. Our current goals to achieve before 2030 include

  • Reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%
  • Reducing scope 3 emissions by 25%
  • Obtaining 90% of the electricity for our global operations from sustainable sources
  • Eliminating 1 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions from our supply chain
  • Achieving a 30% improvement in the energy efficiency of our laptops

On top of all these goals, we’ve offered some of our customers the chance to offset the remaining carbon footprint of any eligible commercial Think-branded device through Lenovo CO2 Offset Services. We’ve also introduced innovative, low-temperature solder technology that conserves energy, reduces carbon emissions, and improves device reliability. To date, we’ve shipped 27 million Lenovo laptops manufactured on low-temperature solder lines, and saved 5,956 tons of CO2 annually.

Recycled materials

Lenovo is an industry leader in using post-consumer recycled content (PCC) plastics in the manufacture of our devices and accessories. Since 2005, we’ve used more than 110 million pounds of recycled plastics in the manufacture of our products and packaging. Just last year, we collaborated with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation to develop a new adapter containing an industry leading 90% PCC. By 2025, we’re aiming to have 100% of PC products containing materials made from PCC plastics.

Circular economy

We’re aiming on transitioning to a circular economy throughout our product range. That means maximising the value of products in their lifecycle, and minimising raw material use and waste generation. To achieve this, we’re working towards maximising product lifespans through repairability initiatives, and their value through our Device as a Service (DaaS) initiative. We’re also recovering remaining product value at end of life through our product takeback programmes. By 2025, all Lenovo device repairs will be able to be done by customers themselves, and 76% of PC parts returned to our service centre will be repaired for later use. By that time, we will have enabled the recycling and reuse of 800 million pounds of end-of-life products since 2005.

While we work hard to provide innovative, high-quality technology, we also want to make sure we’re doing the right thing. Providing great value means making sure we hold ourselves responsible to give our customers products that are reliable and responsibly made. Lenovo has already made great achievements in reducing our impact on the planet. And we will continue to look for opportunities to build a smarter future.
