10th November 2021 Achieving sustainability with Lexmark

Reduce your impact on the environment while improving your bottom line

Now more than ever, companies worldwide are considering their impact on the planet. In the printing sector, there are many unique problems for businesses trying to increase their sustainability. Problems that Lexmark are uniquely placed to help you solve, for both your business, and your customers. For Lexmark, sustainability and responsibility are core corporate values. That’s why they provide sustainable solution throughout their products’ lifecycle. With Lexmark, it’s easy for you and your customers to reduce your impact on the environment.

Living sustainably

Lexmark make sure that every step of the product lifecycle is as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as possible. From designing long-life, energy efficient models, to increasing the use of recycled and closed-loop PCR. When it comes to distribution, Lexmark offer compact and efficient product and packaging design, and regional manufacturing, to make it as easy and sustainable as possible to get their products to their new homes.

Sustainability isn’t just good for the environment. It makes financial sense, too. When products, packaging, and operations are designed with efficiency and longevity in mind, it means that products can be used for longer before money needs to be spent on a replacement. And Lexmark are always striving for improvement. Long-life components save resources, reduce waste, and require less maintenance. So you and your customers get to experience a boost in efficiency, and a positive impact on your bottom line.

3 step approach

Lexmark’s main method of ensuring sustainability is through their 3-step approach, which ensures the entire product lifecycle is as environmentally-friendly as possible.

Step one: durable design

Lexmark aims to have each device last seven years, with less maintenance and fewer replacements. To achieve this, Lexmark use sturdy metal frames instead of plastic in new generation devices. Not only does this keep products with a long service life, but it also helps to reduce plastic waste. Lexmark devices also have modern sensors that let users know everything from when to replace toner, to a service requirement. This allows for the remote fix of service issues an industry-leading 70% of the time. To date, Lexmark are the only printer manufacturer to meet ISO 20243 certification in recognition of their secure supply chains. This lets users know that Lexmark stands for product quality, sustainability, and safety.

Step two: efficient use

Over 130 Lexmark devices are Blue Angel certified. Their products offer high performance with low energy usage and emissions, and minimal noise. Lexmark Cloud Print Management saves energy by reducing the amount of site-based print servers, and instead using shared computing power in the cloud. This has been found to reduce the number of pages printed by up to 30%.
The Unison printing system maximises component life while saving time, costs, service interventions and energy. All thanks to its reliable, high speed, lower-temperature printing capabilities. With built-in power saving modes and specialised print functions, Lexmark devices can save up to 70% energy and reduce paper and toner consumption.

Step three: sustainability initiatives

Intentional engineering and continued support are big first steps into creating a lifecycle of sustainability. But Lexmark have taken their environment consciousness to the next level by offering customers a range of initiatives to help combat their impact on the planet. Their partnership with PrintReleaf empowers users to plant trees to offset the amount of paper used to print. So far, this has led to the planting of 373,000 new trees. Meanwhile Smart Refresh offers a data-based approach to determining when devices truly need to be replaced. The Lexmark Cartridge Collection Programme gives users a free and easy way to return used cartridges to Lexmark’s recycling centres, where they can be responsibly disposed of, or even reused to make new cartridges. Currently, Lexmark sees 18,000 cartridges processed per day through this initiative. This idea is continued in the Lexmark Equipment Collection Program, which gives users the same option for safe and easy disposal of devices and printers at the end of their usable life. And for those devices that qualify, the Lexmark Evergreen scheme can give them a second life by refurbishing them and placing them back into service.

Lexmark are proving themselves as leaders in sustainability. And they’re always setting new goals to customers the most sustainable devices possible. While they have seen a 19% reduction in single use plastics in packaging since 2019, their goal is a 50% reduction by 2025. And they are committed to becoming carbon neutral across all operations by 2035. A dedication to optimising all of their operations for sustainability and an innovative 3 step approach make Lexmark the top choice for customers who want to do their bit for the planet.
